Understanding Neuropathy

What Neuropathy Really Is

Peripheral nerves carry signals between your spinal cord and the rest of your body — sensation from your skin and commands to your muscles. Neuropathy means those nerves aren’t working normally, which can cause numbness, tingling, burning, sharp pain, weakness, or poor balance, often starting in the feet or hands.

Diabetes is the most common cause, but neuropathy can also come from vitamin deficiencies such as low B12, thyroid problems, certain medications including chemotherapy, alcohol use, and nerves being compressed in the neck, back, wrist, or ankle. Because the cause shapes the treatment, finding it is the first priority.

Dr. Sanderson’s background in electrodiagnostic testing — including real-time nerve monitoring alongside orthopedic surgeons and neurosurgeons in the operating room — gives him a detailed understanding of how nerves function and how they’re injured. We work alongside your physician, not in place of them.

What We See Most Often

Types of Nerve Problems We Evaluate

Nerve symptoms can come from a whole-body condition or from a single compressed nerve. Telling them apart guides the right care.

Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy

  • Numbness or tingling in both feet
  • Burning or pins-and-needles, often worse at night
  • Feeling unsteady when walking
How We Treat ItBalance and strength training, foot and ankle mobility work, and coordination with your physician on blood sugar management.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

  • Numbness in the thumb, index, and middle fingers
  • Symptoms that wake you at night
  • Dropping things or weaker grip
How We Treat ItNerve mobilization, wrist and forearm soft tissue work, positioning strategies, and referral for nerve testing when indicated.

Pinched Nerve in the Neck or Back

  • Tingling that follows a path down one arm or leg
  • Neck or back pain alongside nerve symptoms
  • Weakness in one limb
How We Treat ItTraction, targeted adjustments, and nerve-friendly exercise to relieve pressure on the nerve root. Disc injuries

Foot & Ankle Nerve Compression

  • Burning or tingling in the sole or heel
  • Symptoms on one side only
  • Pain that worsens with standing or walking
How We Treat ItFoot and ankle mobilization, nerve gliding, footwear guidance, and referral when indicated. Heel pain care

Neuropathy From Other Medical Causes

  • Symptoms after chemotherapy or other medications
  • Neuropathy linked to thyroid or vitamin issues
  • A diagnosis from your physician or neurologist
How We Treat ItSupportive care focused on balance, strength, and function, coordinated with your medical team.

Balance Problems & Fall Risk

  • Feeling unsteady in the dark or on uneven ground
  • Near-falls or a recent fall
  • Walking more cautiously than before
How We Treat ItProgressive balance and strength training, home safety strategies, and footwear guidance.
Finding the Cause

Why a Thorough Nerve Evaluation Matters

Neuropathy symptoms can look alike even when the causes are very different. A careful evaluation helps make sure you get the right care — from us, from your physician, or both.

  • Whole-body vs. single-nerve problems — neuropathy in both feet is managed very differently than one compressed nerve at the wrist or spine.
  • Medical testing — blood sugar, vitamin B12, and thyroid levels are common contributors your physician can check.
  • Nerve testing when it’s needed — we refer for EMG and nerve conduction studies when your findings call for them.
  • Foot protection — people with reduced feeling in their feet need regular foot checks, since small injuries can go unnoticed.

The Amplified Approach

Evidence-Based Care for Neuropathy

An umbrella review of 14 systematic reviews on exercise for diabetic peripheral neuropathy found that exercise training reduces neuropathic symptoms and improves physical function, that balance exercises improve balance and reduce fear of falling, and that foot and ankle mobilization increases range of motion (reference).

After a full evaluation, we combine the treatments that fit your findings, and coordinate with your physician on the medical side of your care.

EX

Balance & Strength Training

Progressive balance, leg-strength, and walking drills to improve stability and reduce fall risk.

JM

Foot & Ankle Mobilization

Gentle mobilization and stretching to restore foot and ankle motion that supports balance.

NM

Nerve Mobilization

Gentle nerve-gliding techniques to improve how compressed nerves move and tolerate load.

CT

Spinal Traction

Cervical or lumbar decompression when a pinched nerve in the neck or back is contributing.

DC

Chiropractic Adjustments

Targeted adjustments when spinal joint problems are contributing to nerve irritation.

MT

Manual Therapy & TENS

Soft tissue work around compressed nerves, plus TENS to help manage nerve pain.

FP

Fall-Prevention Coaching

Footwear, home safety, and daily habits that help you stay steady and independent.

NU

Nutrition Coaching

A consultation with a registered dietitian to support blood sugar management and overall nerve health.

When Nerve Symptoms Need Immediate Medical Attention

Call 911 for sudden weakness, numbness, or drooping on one side of the body, or trouble speaking — these can be signs of a stroke. Go to the emergency room if numbness or weakness spreads quickly over hours to days, especially with trouble walking or breathing, or if you lose bladder or bowel control. If you have diabetes, any foot wound, color change, or sign of infection needs prompt medical care. During your evaluation, we screen for these warning signs and refer when your findings call for it.

Common Questions

Neuropathy FAQs

Can neuropathy be reversed?

It depends on the cause. When a nerve is being compressed, or a cause like low B12 is found and treated, symptoms can improve. For long-standing diabetic neuropathy, the focus is on reducing symptoms, improving balance and function, and protecting your feet.

Can a chiropractor help with neuropathy?

We can help in specific ways: relieving pressure on compressed nerves, and improving the balance, strength, and mobility that neuropathy affects. We work alongside your physician, who manages the medical causes of neuropathy.

Do I need nerve testing?

Not always. When your symptoms or exam findings suggest nerve damage or a specific entrapment, we refer for EMG and nerve conduction studies to clarify the diagnosis and guide care.

Why do you focus on balance?

Neuropathy reduces feeling in the feet, which makes it harder to sense where you are and raises the risk of falls. Research shows balance training improves stability and reduces fear of falling in people with neuropathy.

Does shockwave therapy help neuropathy?

Research on shockwave therapy for neuropathy is still early. We’ll recommend it only when the evidence supports it for your specific condition, and we’ll explain why.

Where are you located?

We’re at 1203 Jacaranda Blvd., 2nd Floor at Venice Healthpark, Venice, FL 34292 — convenient to patients from Venice, Nokomis, Osprey, North Port, and Englewood.
