Knee Pain Treatment That Keeps You Walking, Climbing, and Moving
Pain on the stairs, stiffness getting up from a chair, or an ache that cuts your walks short — Dr. Jordan Sanderson and our team evaluate your knee along with the hip and foot mechanics around it, then build a plan to reduce pain and restore strength.
Why Knee Pain Happens
Your knee is a hinge joint that carries several times your body weight with every stair you climb. It relies on cartilage to cushion the joint, strong tendons to transfer force, and the muscles of the hip and thigh to keep it tracking smoothly.
When those muscles weaken or the load on the knee outpaces what its tissues can handle — from arthritis, a sudden increase in activity, or an injury — the joint and tendons become irritated and painful. Weakness at the hip or stiffness at the ankle often shows up as pain at the knee.
We take the time to explain what’s happening in your knee, because understanding your pain is the first step toward taking control of your recovery.
Common Causes of Knee Pain
Knee pain can come from the joint, the tendons, or the way forces travel through your leg. These are the patterns we evaluate and treat most often.
Knee Osteoarthritis
- Stiffness after sitting or first thing in the morning
- Aching with walking or stairs
- Swelling after activity
Patellar Tendinopathy (Jumper’s Knee)
- Pain just below the kneecap
- Pain with jumping, squatting, or stairs
- Stiffness when you start moving
Runner’s Knee (Patellofemoral Pain)
- Aching around or behind the kneecap
- Pain with sitting, squatting, or stairs
- Worse after running or hiking
IT Band Syndrome
- Pain on the outside of the knee
- Pain that builds during runs or rides
- Tightness along the outer thigh
Inner Knee Tendon Pain
- Pain on the inner knee just below the joint
- Tenderness with stairs or getting out of a car
- Often seen alongside arthritis
Ligament & Meniscus Injuries
- Pain after a twist, fall, or collision
- Swelling, locking, or giving way
- Difficulty bearing weight
Accident-Related Knee Injuries Need Prompt, Well-Documented Care
In a collision, the knee can strike the dashboard or brace hard against the floorboard, injuring the kneecap, ligaments, and surrounding tissues. Pain and swelling often build over the following days. Early evaluation protects both your recovery and your claim.
- The 14-day window — in Florida, you generally need initial treatment within 14 days of the accident for PIP benefits to apply.
- Direct PIP billing — we handle the auto insurance billing for you.
- Legal representation accepted — we work directly with your attorney so treatment isn’t delayed.
- Objective measures — range of motion, strength, and function testing documented at every visit.

Evidence-Based Treatment for Knee Pain
A systematic review and meta-analysis in the International Journal of Surgery found moderate-quality evidence that shockwave therapy reduces pain and improves function in people with knee osteoarthritis (reference).
After a full evaluation, we combine the treatments that fit your findings — with progressive strengthening at the center of every knee plan.
Focused Shockwave Therapy
The STORZ Duolith SD1 for knee arthritis, patellar tendinopathy, and stubborn tendon pain.
Functional & Strength Exercise
Progressive hip, thigh, and calf strengthening to support and unload the knee.
Manual Therapy & TENS
Soft tissue work and TENS to ease pain and release tight muscles around the knee.
Joint Mobilization
Gentle mobilization of the knee, hip, and ankle to restore smooth, comfortable motion.
Kinesiology Taping
Support for the kneecap and surrounding muscles between visits.
Chiropractic Adjustments
Low back and pelvic adjustments when hip and back mechanics are contributing to knee pain.
Movement & Gait Coaching
Guidance on walking, squatting, and stair mechanics to reduce stress on the knee.
Nutrition Coaching
A consultation with a registered dietitian to manage inflammation and support healthy body weight.
When Knee Pain Needs Immediate Medical Attention
Seek urgent care if you can’t bear weight after an injury, the knee looks deformed, or it’s locked and won’t straighten. Go to the emergency room for a hot, red, swollen knee with fever, or for calf pain, swelling, and warmth — which can signal a blood clot. During your evaluation, we screen for these warning signs and refer for imaging or specialist care when your findings call for it.
Knee Pain FAQs
Can shockwave therapy help knee arthritis?
Research shows shockwave therapy can reduce pain and improve function for many people with knee osteoarthritis. We combine it with strengthening, which remains one of the most effective long-term treatments for arthritic knees.
Will exercise make my knee arthritis worse?
The right exercise is one of the best things you can do for an arthritic knee. Stronger hip and thigh muscles help absorb load. We start at a level your knee tolerates and progress from there.
Do I need an MRI?
Not always. Many knee problems can be evaluated with a hands-on exam. We refer for imaging after a significant injury, when the knee is locking or giving way, or when symptoms aren’t improving.
Can I avoid knee surgery?
Many people with knee pain — including arthritis — manage well with conservative care. When your findings suggest surgery may be the better option, we’ll refer you for an orthopedic evaluation.
How long does knee pain take to improve?
It depends on the cause. Tendon problems and runner’s knee often improve over several weeks of consistent care, while arthritis is managed over the longer term. We set clear goals for each phase so you always know where you stand.
